Chester's Proposed New Theatre
Cheshire West and Chester Council is redeveloping the former Odeon Cinema into a new Cultural Centre with theatre, library and cinema spaces which will be the focus of day-long activity in the city centre. The centre will blend theatre, music, dance, literature and cinema in what will be a nationally celebrated fusion of a library and performing arts space. The project involves converting and extending the vacant building.
The Council is investing nearly £30m and committing revenue funding of £920,000 to create the 800-seat theatre, 100-seat cinema and library, café, 150-seat studio theatre and offices. They have appointed an award-winning team which includes architects Bennetts Associates and main contractor Kier to design and construct the project. A scheme has been developed to accommodate the needs of the cultural centre whilst preserving and enhancing the character of the Art Deco Odeon and integrating the building into the city centre.
